How to fix what the report found
Almost everything in a typical report is fixable by your own team. This is the order to work in.
1. Start with what blocks, not with what is numerous
A single unlabelled form field in a template appears on every page, but it is one fix. Do not order the work by instance count; order it by what stops someone completing a task: form labels, alt text on images that are links, keyboard access, and a visible focus indicator.
2. Contrast is usually one line of CSS
The most common failure on municipal sites is light grey text on white. Darkening one colour variable in the stylesheet fixes hundreds of instances at once.
3. Keyboard-test the three or four tasks that matter
Unplug your mouse and try to pay a bill, file a permit, read an agenda, and contact an official. Twenty minutes will find things no scanner catches. You do not need to test the whole site.
4. Put it in your next vendor contract
If your CMS, payment portal, or agenda system is a third-party product, require WCAG 2.1 AA conformance in writing at the next renewal. It is the cheapest lever you have and the one most often missed.
5. Write down what you did and when
A documented, good-faith remediation effort is legally relevant as well as good practice. Keep dates, decisions, and a note of what is outstanding and why.
